The Co-operative Funeralcare Welsh Grand Prix 2012 Featured

Written by  Richard Maddieson

Home supporters suffered a major disappointment on the second day of the Co-operative Funeralcare Welsh Grand Prix at Llanelli when one of their favourite sons, Robert Weale, was beaten by a young qualifier from England making his debut at this level. Calvin Leuty, a 22-year-old accountant who plays out of the Spalding club in Lincolnshire, certainly got his figures right as he recovered from a set down to topple Wales' top ranked player, 6-8, 10-5, 2-1, to set up a second round clash with England's Mervyn King.

Returning to the portable rink just a week after winning an emotional third world indoor singles title at the age of 56, England's Andy Thomson was made to work hard for his opening round win over international colleague Brett Arkley, from the Stanley club in County Durham.

Thomson lost the first set 6-5, but found his form in the second with an 11-2 win and then sealed a last 16 clash with Scotland's Alex Marshall by taking the opening two ends in the tie-break.

Scotland's Darren Burnett, the 2010 champion, had a scare before getting past regular American qualifier Neil Furman on a tie-break.

Burnett, the world number three, appeared to have matters under control when he took the first set 9-3, but then conceded a maximum four count on the opening end of the second, and the American, a former semi-finalist in this event, capitalised in no uncertain manner to take the set 9-3, before the Arbroath policeman recovered his composure to win the tie-break 2-0.

This Welsh ranking tournament has never been the happiest of hunting grounds for record five-time world champion Alex Marshall, who has yet to get beyond the quarter-finals, but the Scot certainly looked at home in his opening match against Australian qualifier Brett Wilkie, winning 11-3, 11-7, although he did let slip a 7-2 lead in the second that allowed the Aussie just a faint a glimmer of hope that was quickly extinguished.

England's Billy Jackson, battling to retain his place in the world's top 16, is certainly not going to go down without a fight as he proved with his 9-4, 10-10, defeat of Ian Bond, who fell through the trapdoor at the end of last season.

Jackson still faces an uphill task to preserve his top flight status, but this defeat for England colleague Bond, who came back from 10-6 down in the second set to just fail to take the match into a tie-break, means the 'Devon Destroyer', who fell through the trapdoor last year, will have to wait at last another season for the opportunity to return.
